One hundred and twenty-three in-patients and out-patients aged between 55 and 100 years attending a geriatric unit in London were examined in order to determine their need for dental care. A questionnaire study was found to be unreliable. Over 50% would probably benefit from some treatment, as opposed to simply having a clinical need. The major requirement for care was in the field of prosthetic dentistry, including the cleaning of dentures. © 1979 The Society of Community Medicine.
