ortho-Methoxyaniline has been polymerized using chemical and electrochemical methods and it has been characterized by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The polymer's solubility and electrochemical response have also been investigated. Electrochemical film growth has been obtained by cyclic voltammetry in various potential ranges. The chemically synthesized poly(o-anisidine) possesses higher solubility in common organic solvents than polyaniline, permitting the casting of relatively flexible, free-standing, lustrous films from a low boiling point solvent. X-ray diffraction measurements on samples prepared by either synthesis technique show that the steric effects of the o-methoxy substituent do not hinder polymer crystallization.
