The application of existing and developing technologies in laparoscopic surgery has given birth to a new concept: telepresence surgery. Robotics, teleoperation, and telerobotics are key concepts in the understanding of telepresence. Key concepts of robotics, teleoperation, telerobotics, and virtual reality and their surgical applications are introduced and discussed.
