ISOLATION AND TOXICITY OF BACILLUS-THURINGIENSIS FROM SOIL AND INSECT HABITATS IN NEW-ZEALAND

A total of 6909 isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis were obtained from 455 samples of soil, insect larvae, and insect habitats from throughout New Zealand. Isolates tested for toxicity killed insects in three orders: lepidoptera, diptera and coleoptera. Some isolates were toxic to both Lepidoptera and Diptera and some were not toxic to any of the insects tested. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the different groups of toxic crystals indicated a diversity of crystal types. Copyright © 1993 Academic Press. All rights reserved.
