The two criteria used for truncating expansions in the derivations made within extended irreversiblethermodynamics are discussed. For a dilute monoatomic gas, they lead to different relaxation equations for the noconcerved variables already at the Maxwell-Cattaneo level. A direct comparison with the results obtainedfrom the Boltzmann equation suggests that the criterion that assigns order according to the power of nonconserved variables should be preferred over the one that specifies the order with the number of spatial gradientoperators.
