SYNTHESIS AND IONIZATION CONSTANTS OF META- AND PARA-SUBSTITUTED 1-PHENYL-2-METHYLCYCLOPROPENE-3-CARBOXYLIC ACIDS

1-Phenyl-2-methylcyclopropene-3-carboxylic acid and the p-OCH3, m-CH3, p-F, p-Cl, and m-Cl derivatives were prepared by the addition of ethyl diazoacetate to the appropriately substituted 1-phenylpropyne with subsequent hydrolysis. The ionization constants in 50% ethanol at 25° give p = 0.57 (-log K0, = 6.45) using μ° values. The cyclopropene ring appears to transmit resonance effects about as well as does the cyclopropane ring. © 1969, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
