THE USE OF SODIUM-SULFITE TO IMPROVE THE FLOTATION SELECTIVITY BETWEEN CHALCOPYRITE AND GALENA IN A COMPLEX SULFIDE ORE

摘要
The processing of complex sulphide ores by the sequential method of flotation requires maximal selectivity. In particular, the entrainment of galena into the chalcopyrite concentrate obtained with a dialkylthionocarbamate-type collector must be minimized. Use of sodium sulphite, in association with alkaline-earth or metal hydroxides released by the ore, helps to reduce the entrainment of lead into the copper ore. We have observed these phenomena with pure minerals and then with a natural ore. Observations of the electrokinetic potential and surface adsorption phenomena of galena suggest a mode of action of Ca2+ and Ba2+ ions or metal hydroxides. The species formed by barium on galena were detected by diffuse reflectance infrared interferometry.
