CHROMODYNAMICS AND THE FEYNMAN-CHI DEPENDENCE OF LEPTON PAIRS IN HADRON COLLISIONS

Quantum chromodynamics predicts simple counting rules for the Feynman-xF dependence of the transverse momentum of lepton pairs produced in hadron collisions. We discuss their origin and their experimental consequences. Our main conclusions are that (i) the QCD contribution to pT2 decreases linearly as xF→xFmax, regardless of the shape of the quark or gluon structure functions, and (ii) the pT spectrum of the lepton pair is given by dσdmdxFdpT2(xFmax→xF)n. The slope of the spectrum (n) increases for increasing pT values and is determined by the quark and gluon structure of the colliding hadrons when pT becomes large. © 1979 The American Physical Society.
