Metal foils in contact with thick targets were used to study the effects of secondary particles on monitor reactions for high-energy protons. Quantitative data are presented for the nuclear reactions 197Au(p,15p34n)149Tb, 27Al(p,3pn)24Na, 27Al(p,3p3n)22Na and 27Al(p,5p5n)18F. The results were applied in monitoring intensities of protons incident on thick targets in external and internal proton beams of a synchrotron. A technique for monitoring circulating beam intensities is suggested. © 1968.
