Bulk single-superconducting-phase thallium 2234 superconductor, Tl2-xBa2Ca3+xCu4O12-delta is synthesized by allowing for calcium substitution in the thallium site, using a 2245 composition in the precursor and reacting for several minutes at almost-equal-to 900-degrees-C followed by a 1 to 2 h anneal at almost-equal-to 850-degrees-C. The compounds, as synthesized, show a single sharp diamagnetic transition at 113 K which can be increased by oxygen loading or prolonged vacuum annealing to 116 K. Further increase is prevented by decomposition. Electron beam X-ray analysis shows a tendency for calcium substitution on the thallium site to remain fixed at x almost-equal-to 0.30, irrespective of starting composition. We propose that in both 2223 and 2234, vacuum annealing slowly increases this fraction resulting in hole doping and an increase in T(c).
