摘要
The main concern of this paper is an exploration of the structure of casual conversation. It will be argued that this structure varies according to the social distance (Hasan 1978a) between the interactants. This variation in turn permits a structural classification of conversation into two types: minimal and non-minimal. The functions of these two types of conversation differ: the first serves to establish and/or maintain contact between interactants while the second is an expression of greater involvement. © 1979.
