ATOMIC OSCILLATOR-STRENGTHS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF INTERSTELLAR ULTRAVIOLET-ABSORPTION LINE DATA FROM THE HUBBLE-SPACE-TELESCOPE

The Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a powerful facility for studying the composition and physical conditions of the interstellar medium. In this paper the diagnostic potential of ultraviolet absorption line spectroscopy for instellar studies is briefly discussed and the spectroscopic characteristics of the GHRS are described. The conversion of absorption line profiles into reliable measures of interstellar column density requires knowledge of accurate resonance line oscillator strengths. A discussion of the general needs for new measurements or theoretical calculations of resonance line oscillator strengths is followed by the identification of a small number of specific resonance line transitions in abundant atoms of great importance to interstellar medium studies.
