In a STM paradigm, four groups of 96 Ss each had all combinations of low and high acoustic similarity of items and sequential and simultaneous modes of presentation. Acoustic interference occurred as a proactive inhibition effect of prior items, and then only for the sequential mode and an immediate retention test. Acoustic interference was absent at a 30-sec test, showing its short life. © 1969, Psychonomic Journals, Inc.. All rights reserved.
