Viable Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in stable association with fine-spun polypropylene web, are shown to be capable of significant concentration of Pu02or PuCI4from aqueous media. These observations confirm previous studies with free-living Pseudomonas and suggest that such a system may be useful for the removal of plutonium from aqueous waste streams. Optimum cell loading of the fine-spurn polymer web used in these studies occurs with monolayer filament coverage, resulting in maximum plutonium fixation. Removal of an average of 34% of suspended Pu02particles and 94% of soluble PuCI4is observed under these conditions. © 1979 Health Physics Society.
