INVESTIGATION OF HETEROGENEOUS CU1-XCOX ALLOYS WITH GIANT MAGNETORESISTANCE

The decomposition kinetics of Cu1-xCox alloys have been investigated based on the theory of spinodal decomposition. Microstructural parameters such as size and concentration of compositional modulations have been predicted for as-prepared and subsequently annealed Cu81Co19 and Cu65Co35 samples. These predicted values have been compared with those determined experimentally from a combination of electron microscopy and field ion microscopy. The discussion emphasizes a possible application of a known decomposition mechanism and evaluated microstructural parameters to improve the amplitude of giant magnetoresistance in heterogeneous Cu1-xCox samples.
