摘要
A method to assess the potential damage of a particular water soluble compound when released in lakes and streams is described. The results of a test using germanium dioxide which has a known effect, provided evidence that quantitative changes in the species composition of the colonizing periphyton community reflect the nature of the toxicant to which they were exposed. Natural diatom growth in the presence of germanium was inhibited and the ensueing changes in the species composition of the treated community were reflected in changes in the index of diversity calculated for that community. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach are discussed. © 1969.
