In this paper we discuss, and to some extent reinterpret the spectroscopic properties of the B820 subunit form of the light-harvesting antenna of the purple bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum. The B820 complex consists of a single protein-bound dimer of BChl a, and as such it is the simplest model system for photosynthetic pigment protein complexes. As will be shown, the results of polarized light spectroscopy (T-S spectroscopy and fluorescence) can be understood by taking into account the dimeric nature of the complex in combination with the degree of inhomogeneous broadening of the monomeric pigments.
