Treatment of (3)-l,2-dicarbadodecahydroundecaborate(–1) and its C,C′-dimethyl derivative with ferric chloride in the presence of a ligand leads to the formal substitution of the ligand for a hydride ion. The resulting B9C2H11L species appears to carry the attached ligand on one of the three boron atoms associated with the open pentagonal face. In general, two isomers are formed in these reactions. Compounds containing tetrahydrofuran, diethyl sulfide, pyridine, and acetonitrile ligands were isolated and characterized. © 1969, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
