FIELD IONIZATION MASS SPECTROMETRY OF HEAVY PETROLEUM FRACTIONS - WAXES

Field ionization mass spectrometry has been applied to the examination of paraffin waxes in the 300° to 550° C boiling range. Using a razor blade as emitter adequate sensitivity has been obtained with a spectral reproducibility of the order of ±5%. Calibration data for the main hydrocarbon types, n-paraffins, isoparaffins, cycloparaffins, and alkylbenzenes, have been derived. Relative sensitivities of the parent peaks of the n-paraffins in the carbon number range 20 to 40 have been determined and found to be equal to each other.
