POLYMER STUDIES BY GEL PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY .3. POLYMERIZATION INITIATED BY AZOBISISOBUTYRONITRILE

Styrene monomer was polymerized at 60° to low conversion using a range of azobisisobutyronitrile concentrations. The resultant polymer samples were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (gpc). Calculations of CI, CM, and kt/kp2 were made from the molecular weight distributions. Values of CM and kt/kp2 agreed well with earlier work;1 however, the value of CI was found to be about 0.16, disagreeing with the prevailing belief that there is no chain transfer with azobisisobutyronitrile. The occurrence of abnormal high molecular weight tailing" (evidenced as double peaking or shouldering on the gpc curves) for the azobisisobutyronitrile-initiated polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene was also investigated and elucidated."
