SPECTRAL SHIFTS IN SOLVENT MIXTURES

Absorption bands of polar molecules in polar-non-polar solvent mixtures shift much more than the dielectric constant of the mixture would imply. This is shown to result from an enrichment in the polar solvent in the shell of polar solutes, which is described quantitatively by the balance between dipole-dielectric stabilization and the change in entropy. © 1969.
