MUON-ELECTRON MASS RATIO AND CP VIOLATION AS A QUANTUM EFFECT

For an SU(2) × U(1) gauge theory with suitable discrete flavor symmetries we propose a model where small electron-muon, u-quark-c-quark mass ratios and small parameters of CP violation can be calculated as a quantum effect. Due to the discrete symmetries, the electron and the u-quark masses vanish in lowest order and no CP violating phase is allowed. By quantum loop corrections to the zeroth-order value, however, the electron and the u-quark acquire small but finite masses. The small CP violating effect is also produced as a higher-order correction. © 1979.
