摘要
This paper discusses a digital image processing method to enhance fine structure contrasts. Enhancement is useful when image contrasts are imperceptible or barely perceptible. Low contrasts can be caused by observing a scene through atmospheric haze or smoke. Also, the dynamic range matching, necessary when a scene is reproduced on a monitor, is almost always a range compression which is accompanied by a loss of contrast. The technique discussed is automatic, not interactive, and enables 'real time' implementation. The obtained contrast enhancement does not depend on the image's local brightness; dark and light regions are treated in the same way. The processing results, at various stages in the processing chain, are illustrated by profiles and photographs. Especially interesting is the application to pictures taken in a hazy atmosphere. Due to the increased contrast, the standoff range (the maximum range at which a target can be acquired and identified) is extended. © 1990.
