摘要
A mechanism for nucleating pairs of topological defects in nonequilibrium pattern-forming systems in two space dimensions plus time is studied. Its relation to the creation of phase slips in a space-time plane is revealed, stressing its deterministic origin from smooth dynamics. The role of this mechanism in the context of spatiotemporal chaos is discussed.
