INHIBITION OF HYDROXYAPATITE FORMATION BY TITANOCENES

The effects of eight titanocenes, (eta-5-C5H5)2TiX2 and (eta-5-C5H4CH3)2TiX2 (X = Cl, F, Br, I), used as drugs for various therapeutic applications, on the crystal growth of hydroxyapatite were investigated at sustained supersaturation. The rates of crystal growth measured in the presence of titanocenes at concentrations as low as 1.6 to 20.1-mu-M were drastically reduced, possibly through adsorption onto the active sites for crystal growth. Kinetics analysis suggested Langmuir-type adsorption of titanocene complexes on the hydroxyapatite surface.
