A discharge-flow resonance-fluorescence technique was used to study the rates of the reactions CH3I + OH → products (1) CF3I + OH → CF3 + HOI. (2) Reaction (1) was studied in the temperature range 271-423 K, and Reaction (2) was investigated at 298 K. The rate constant for Reaction (1) at room temperature is (7.2 ± 0.7) × 10-14 cm3 molecule-1 s-1. The activation energy, Ea, for Reaction (1) is (9.3 ± 1.7) kJ mol-1. The rate constant for Reaction (2) at room temperature is (3.1 ± 0.5) × 10-14 cm3 molecule-1 s-1. No pressure dependence for either reaction was found over the pressure range 1.7-5.0 mmHg. For a typical tropospheric concentration of OH of 7.7 × 105 molecule cm-3, hydroxyl radical scavenging of CH3I accounts for only a 2% loss of CH3I compared with photolysis. © 1990.
