PHONON-INDUCED CORRECTIONS TO TRANSFERRED HYPERFINE COUPLING

Phonon-induced contributions to the antibonding orbitals of an Mn 2+ ion in octahedral crystalline fields are calculated by means of orbit-lattice interaction. The corrected orbitals are used to calculate the transferred hyperfine interaction, which is compared with the experimental measurements in Mn2+-doped LiF. Almost half of the observed variation of the transferred hyperfine interaction is interpreted in terms of implicit (thermal expansion) and half as explicit (lattice vibration) effects. The strength of variation of 19F hyperfine coupling with temperature when calculated from Hartree-Fock wave functions is found to agree with the measured one provided a 4% expansion of wave functions in going from the free ion to the solid state is assumed.
