REACTION OF PACIFIC OYSTER, CRASSOSTREA-GIGAS, TO HOMOLOGOUS TISSUE IMPLANTS

A study was made of the host reaction of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, to intraspecific living tissue implants. A number of the implants were rejected by the host; but those that remained within the host appeared normal throughout the experiment. Although the implants appeared to inhibit wound healing, the process ultimately followed the typical pattern for the species. Leucocytes delineated the wound and formed a union with the implants. Finally, the implants fused with the host and became contiguous with it. © 1969.
