The methods used for, and problems associated with, the reticulation of ethanol stillage (vinasse) onto sugarcane fields through both overhead and furrow irrigation systems are described. Pollution of streams is thereby reduced to a minimum, provided control is constantly exercised. Use of stillage has removed the necessity for annual dressings of potash and phosphate fertilizer, without permanent detriment to the soil, on more than 4,000 hectares of cane lands. © 1990.
