A NEUTRON-DIFFRACTION STUDY OF QUENCHED AND ANNEALED YBA2CU3O7-X (X=0.4,0.6,0.8)

Oxygen vacancy ordering in YBa2Cu3O7-x has been examined using powder neutron diffraction. Samples of well defined stoichiometry, with 0.8#62;x#62;0.3, were prepared and subsequently quenched from high temperatures or annealed at low temperatures, using sealed tube techniques to maintain stoichiometry. Although no long range order was found in any sample, significant displacements of some o atoms were observed at low oxygen contents. A possible model consistent with such displacements is discussed. © 1990.
