Rhodotorucine A is a lipophilic undecapeptide having a novel amino acid, S-farnesylcysteine, at the C-terminus. Sulfonium salt formation of rhodotorucine A and subsequent hydrolysis afforded trans-trans-farnesol, trans-nerolidol and a-bisabolol. Thus, the geometry of the side chain of S-farnesylcysteine was established unambiguously as all trans. The reaction mechanism was also discussed. © 1979 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
