Two equilibria are reported for dimethylberyllium in dimethyl sulfide: (A) (CH3)2Be:S(CH3)2 + S(CH3)2 ⇌ (CH3)2Be:(S(CH3)2)2, and(B) n(CH3)2Be:(S(CH3)2)2, ⇌ ((CH3)2Be)n: (S(CH3)2)2 + (2n- 2)S(CH3)2, where n is as large as 9 in solution. Enthalpies for reactions A and B are found to be – 3.23 and – 9 kcal/mol, respectively. These data are compared with thermodynamic parameters for similar reactions. Methylberyllium chloride is shown to exist in dimethyl sulfide solution only as (CH3)BeCl: (S(CH3)2)2. © 1969, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
