Coorongite was collected on the shores of the Darwin River Reservoir (Australia), where a profuse growth of Botryococcus braunii B race occurs. The products generated on pyrolysis (400°C) of the Coorongite (hydrocarbons, ketones and fatty acids) were compared to those from the resistant biopolymer, PRB B, of B. braunii B race. This biopolymer is located in the outer cell walls which build up the matrix of the colonies. The spectroscopic features (FTIR, solid state 13C NMR) of Coorongite and of PRB B were also compared both on unheated materials and on pyrolysis residues. These observations indicated that the 'non labile' and predominant fraction of Coorongite (c. 75% of the bitumen-free sample) is composed of selectively preserved PRB B.
