SEST CO OBSERVATIONS OF GALAXIES IN THE GRUS QUARTET - NGC-7582 AND NGC-7552

We present CO (J = 1-0) maps of NGC 7582 and NGC 7552, two southern infrared-bright galaxies, using the SEST telescope. Although the general integrated properties of these galaxies fit well with those of large surveys of bright galaxies from the northern hemisphere, each of the galaxies have peculiarities in the CO maps. NGC 7582 shows an asymmetric, doubly peaked CO profile in the central region, which may be associated with an ionized gas disk in the nucleus. NGC 7552 has a very large concentration of molecular gas within the central 45", and suggests a nuclear starburst. Asymmetries in the CO profiles, and comparison with the H I profile, suggest that NGC 7552 has been tidally disturbed sometime in the past. Finally, the global CO to infrared luminosity ratio, and the CO luminosity to H I mass ratio for both NGC 7552 and NGC 7582 are in the high end of the range of these quantities for Seyfert 2 galaxies, despite the fact that only NGC 7582 shows Seyfert activity in the nucleus.
