PRECISE DETERMINATION OF THE CONCENTRATION OF RADIOCESIUM IN THE WATER OF MURUROA LAGOON

The aim of this study was to determine with maximal precision the concentration of CS-137 in the water of Mururoa lagoon and to verify if traces of Cs-134 as reported by the Fondation Cousteau in June 1987 were present in the lagoon. Eighteen 1000-litre samples of water were collected from stations within the lagoon during June and July of 1990. Low-level gamma-ray spectrometry was used to determine cesium radionuclides. The concentration of CS-137 ranged between 2.6 and 3.0 Bq/m3 (mean 2.79 Bq/m3), which is in good agreement with the annual measurements made by the SMSR* during systematic monitoring of the lagoon water.(~)No trace of Cs-134 was detected.
