TESTS OF NEW POLYSTYRENE-BASED SCINTILLATORS

New types of polystyrene-based scintillators were tested regarding long-term stability, radiation resistivity and the saturation of light emission for large dE/dx. They were compared with SCSN38, which has often been used in high-energy physics experiments. Tests carried out over four years have shown that the change in the observed light yield is less than 10% in 1000 days for most of the tested scintillators. The SCSN81T2 type was found to be strong against radiation damage. There was no significant difference among the tested scintillators regarding the saturation of light emission for a large dE/dx. For three new types (SCSN61T2, SCSN81T2 and SCSN81T2B) it was found that their observed light yield is greater than that of SCSN38. The light attenuation length of these types is also much longer than that of SCSN38.
