This paper describes an investigation of the photothermoelasticity measurement technique by means of heating. The physical and optical properties of epoxy resin (Araldite B) were investigated over a temperature range of 20-60 degrees C. The technique and equipment developed to measure the thermal-stress and temperature distributions in a semi-infinite plate of epoxy resin demonstrate that excellent results can be obtained within a temperature range from room temperature to 60 degrees C. The heating method was also used to measure the transient thermal stresses in semi-infinite plates having circular and arc-shaped notches.
