HIGH-RESOLUTION X-RAY SPECTROSCOPY WITH SUPERCONDUCTING TUNNEL-JUNCTIONS

Detectors based on superconducting tunnel junctions exhibit some features superior to present state-of-the-art semiconductor detectors. We present a detector concept with superconducting absorbers for the detection of X-rays with energies below 10 keV in an application to X-ray astronomy. The operation of superconducting tunnel junctions as sensors for secondary excitations, i.e. quasiparticles and phonons, is discussed. X-ray detectors equipped with superconducting absorbers exhibit an energy resolution of better than 60 eV (FWHM) at 5.89 keV, combined with a position resolution of better than 5 mum over an absorber length of 470 mum.
