A solid membrane sensor has been fabricated using basic lead sulphate as an electroactive phase. Preliminary investigations with the membrane exhibit promising selectivity for chromate ions, which can be estimated in the concentration range 2x10(-5)-1x10(-1) M at pH 7-10. The potential generated across the membrane is reproducible and the response time is 20 s. The electrode also works well in a partially non-aqueous medium. The electrode is selective over a number of monovalent, bivalent and polyvalent anions. It can be used for the estimation of CrO42- by potentiometric titrations with Pb2+ ions. Estimation of chromium in the waste from the electroplating industry has successfully been achieved with this membrane sensor.
