SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPY INVESTIGATION OF SMALL PALLADIUM CATALYST PARTICLES SUPPORTED ON GRAPHITE

Palladium particles have been vapour-deposited on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite at room temperature under ultra-high vacuum, and then observed with a scanning tunneling microscope operated in air. Deposits in the 10(13)-10(15) Pd atoms cm-2 range were investigated. For low-density deposits clusters are quite flat, 1-2 nm in size. The number of clusters increases regularly along with the amount of palladium deposited, until a nearly entire coverage of the surface by clusters was obtained. Then for higher-density deposits, three-dimensional islands could be imaged.
