OBSERVATION OF AN EFFECT DUE TO NONSTATIONARY SHOT NOISE

We have observed an effect of non-stationary shot noise by measuring the noise behavior of intensity-modulated light emitted from a laser-diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser. When we detected the modulated light and measured the noise in the demodulated output using a reference signal of half the modulation frequency, although the observed noise spectra were white, the magnitude was clearly dependent on the phase of the reference signal. This effect is one of the most important features of non-stationary shot noise. The observed dependence is in good agreement with a theoretical calculation.
