GROWTH-RATE OF BI-2212 SUPERCONDUCTING WHISKERS FROM MELT-QUENCHED BSCCO CONTAINING ALUMINA

Growth rates of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) superconducting whiskers (2212 phase) were determined by in situ observation at high temperatures. The whiskers were grown from a compacted specimen (substrate) of the mixture of melt-quenched Bi2Sr2CaCu2AlOx powders and alumina powders at the rate of similar to 0.08 x 10(-6) m/s by heating at 865 degrees C in air. The apparent activation energy for the whisker growth was estimated to be similar to 980 kJ/mol.
