摘要
Single-phase chromium carbide (Cr7C3) has been prepared by the aluminothermic reduction of calcined chromium oxide (Cr2O3) in the presence of carbon. Stoichiometric aluminium in the charge has been found to be adequate to form the desired chromium carbide. Additional heat required to make the reaction self-sustaining and achieve cleaner separation of the carbide has been provided by incorporating a chemical heat booster in the charge. The quality of the product has been examined by X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and metallography.
