摘要
The system analyzed in this paper consists of a semi-infinite chain of mass points with linear and nonlinear nearest neighbor interaction. There is no dissipation in the system. A finite velocity step is applied at the first mass point at zero time to generate a shock-like disturbance in the system. Explicit solution of the linear case is extended to the nonlinear case by a time-averaging procedure. The approximate solution thus obtained compares favorably with numerical solutions and provides enhanced understanding of the physics of the system. © 1969.
