BRIGHTNESS CONTRAST AS A FUNCTION OF FIGURE-GROUND RELATIONS

Shows that a cognitive variable, such as figure-ground relationship, can affect the amount of perceived brightness contrast. Exp. I and II indicate that an area perceived as figure shows a greater amount of brightness contrast than when that same area is perceived as ground. Exp. III uses this finding to explain the Benary brightness demonstration. 40, 16, and 16 paid volunteers were used in the 3 experiments, respectively.
