The interphasial structure of polypyrrole electrodes was investigated by surface analysis, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Hall effect analysis, and electrochemical kinetic experiments. Information was obtained regarding properties of the apparent surface area at the molecular level, the interphasial charge storage, the charge carrier density and mobility, and the band structure. Based on these properties, along with electrochemical kinetic information, a model of the structure of the polypyrrole interphase is proposed. This model is further interpreted in terms of the molecular structure of polypyrrole, and mechanisms are proposed for the molecular action of charge storage and charge transfer at oxidized polypyrrole electrodes.
