INHIBITION OF TOAD (BUFO-BUFO L) RETINAL ON-OFF AND OFF-GANGLION CELLS VIA ACTIVE EYE CLOSING

摘要
Neurons responded to sudden changes in illumination intensity (brightening or darkening) over the visual field with short on or off bursts when the toad''s eyes were open. This same neuron remained silent when the toad threw shadows on the retina via eye closing. The command from a certain brain center (close the eye) is accompanied by a 2nd one to the eye, the efference copy: inhibit the off-response of retinal ganglion cells. This inhibition is apparently only effective during the eye-blink and ceases if the eye remains closed.
