STABILITY OF OSCILLATING WEDGES AND CARET WINGS IN HYPERSONIC AND SUPERSONIC FLOWS

The perturbation equations for inviscid unsteady hypersonic and supersonic flows past a wedgelike bodjr, for which the bow shock is attached, are derived and solved by expanding the unknown functions in power series in ife, where k is the frequency parameter. Exact formulas for the stability derivatives of a wedge of any thickness with an attached bow shock in hypersonic or supersonic flows are obtained in closed form. An exact general criterion for the stability of a wedge and neutral damping boundaries are also obtained. The same method is applied in studying the stability of a caret wing at its design condition in hypersonic flow; thus, exact formulas for its stability derivatives are obtained and shown to be independent of its aspect ratio but dependent only on the flight Mach number and the incidence of its lower ridge. © 1969 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc., All rights reserved.
