ANTIFERROMAGNETISM IN THE R2BANIO5 OXIDES (R = ND, EU, DY, HO)

The family of mixed oxides R2BaNiO5 (R = Nd-Tm and Y) which crystallise with orthorhombic symmetry, space group Immm, shows as main structural feature the existence of isolated chains of flattened (NiO6) octahedra along the a-axis, giving rise to very short Ni-O(axial)-Ni at 180-degrees distances (3.75 angstrom for Er2BaNiO5). This justifies the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior that we have reported for Y2BaNiO5. Magnetic susceptibility measurements for R2BaNiO5 (R = Nd, Eu, Dy and Ho) confirm the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior along the nickel chains above room temperature. The magnetic moments calculated from the linear part of the chi--1 vs. T plots agree with those expected for the different paramagnetic R3+ lanthanoid ions. However, in all cases we have observed the existence of a maximum in the chi vs. T plots between 44 K and 10 K depending on R3+. The presence of these maximum has been attributed to the existence of three-dimensional antiferromagnetics interactions in both R3+ and Ni2+ sublattices.
