ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE AND SPECTRA OF NIOBIUM METAL ATOM CLUSTERS

Electronic absorption spectra have been obtained for a number of (Nb 6Cl12)n+ (n = 2,3,4) compounds in ethanol, or nitromethane solution and in some instances, over a limited frequency region in KBr pellets. A qualitative scheme for the bonding in the polynuclear transition metal complexes is proposed and compared with previous models. A new assignment of the electronic transitions in Nb6Cl12 n+species is made and criteria for the identification of metal-metal transitions in these systems are proposed. The effects of terminal ligands on the spectra are considered.
